Aurore no. 2

With this work, my aim is to tackle the notion of time, and particularly the present moment, as a space we often forget to occupy. Taking inspiration from the Automatiste and Plasticien movements first emerging in the 1950s in Canada, my work is an intuitive reflection on the use of material and colour as emotional and symbolic tools in abstraction.

Exploring these elements, I utilized repurposed found materials to create a variety of sculptural paintings that evoke imagery of landscapes and the sky as signifiers of time and memory. Incorporating colours from my own memories of the outdoors (vibrant lakeside mountain sunrises, bright spring afternoons of tulips in full bloom, fireside after dusk in a heavily wooded area) with natural repurposed materials, the pieces reflect the diversity of the Canadian outdoors and how drastically it changes with the rising and setting of the sun.

These architectural works draw inspiration from design principles of the 1950s-1960s, and the recent resurgence of mid-century modern aesthetics in the mainstream. Fascinated by the seemingly never-ending desire to be anytime, anywhere, but here, these works serve as introspections on what it means to truly be living for the present moment.
